I don’t watch, much less enjoy, divorcee dramas. But Cunning Single Lady had something others did not: perfectly cast leads. Joo Sang Wook and Lee Min Jung worked wonder on screen, making me like them. If it hadn’t been for the second leads, the drama would have been vastly more enjoyable. The motivations for their divorce were explored enough. I loved Joo Sang Wok’s comedic act throughout. What I liked most was that affection was somehow tangible and palpable all throughout the- admittedly- predictable fights and arguments.
Funny, it only took a story like this to make me notice the man called Joo Sang Wook. Despite watching Giant, I can’t even remember what was here. Seen him in That Fool in not quie such a likeable role. Apparently did well in TEN- which is something I am yet to watch. Lee Min Jung has always been like a bit of a sunshine. Even back in Boys Over Flowers Day, I thought she was the absolute standout in the otherwise dreary drama that Boy over Flower Was. Her role in Cunning Single Lady won her more points with me. I did not enjoy All About My romance quite as much last year, mostly because as good of an actor as Shin Ha Kyun is, I find him to be a little…unsettling in romantic-comedic roles. Maybe because he got me used to an entirely different selection of roles. Seeing him in a romcom was a difficult experience, to be honest. This, in turn, was very pleasant.- speaking purely in terms of how the leads were cast and how they engaged me.
They certainly are my contenders to the best couple this season. I didn’t expect to like this drama but I did. Solely because of Joo Sang Wook and Lee Min Jung.
